Ruby crystals in kyanite.

While ruby has a hardness of 9 and good durability, kyanite has a hardness of 5-7 and fair to poor toughness, making this suitable for use in pendants, earrings and brooches but care should be taken if using in rings, bracelets and cufflinks.

Stability – resistance to alteration by light, heat or chemicals

Toughness – resistance to fracture, cleavage or cracking
