Unusual thick slice of a black tourmaline or Schorl crystal that has smooth sides and a flat back.

With a hardness of 7 – 7.5, fair to good toughness and very good stability, these are suitable for use in rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, brooches and cufflinks although the unpolished surface will be more vulnerable to damage than a polished surface.

Hardness – resistance to scratching and wear

Stability – resistance to alteration by light, heat or chemicals

Toughness – resistance to fracture, cleavage or cracking
