Definitely not for the shy and retiring, this huge stone is deep black with a pocket of lighter and darker grey crystals.
I particularly liked the druzy crystal formation in this stone – a druzy is a mass of small crystals that have formed when mineral-rich water evaporated and crystallised on the surface of another stone. The mineral content of the water dictated what crystallised, each variety of mineral crystal having their unique colours, lustre and formation.
Agate has a hardness of 6, excellent toughness and good stability, making it suitable for use in rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, brooches and cufflinks, although abrasion and wear may occur in rings and bracelets.
Hardness – resistance to scratching and wear
Stability – resistance to alteration by light, heat or chemicals
Toughness – resistance to fracture, cleavage or cracking
