This translucent turquoise blue stone has off-white star-like inclusions. It is a silicate mineral and one of the silicate group that make up 90% of the Earth’s crust. A component of calamine lotion (really!), it is found in the upper parts of zinc and lead ores and has been discovered in Europe, North America, North Africa, Thailand, and Matlock in Derbyshire.
With a hardness of 4.5-5 and its brittle nature, this stone is not suitable for rings or bracelets and care needs to be taken when designing for this stone and when working with it.
Hardness – resistance to scratching and wear
Stability – resistance to alteration by light, heat or chemicals
Toughness – resistance to fracture, cleavage or cracking
