Deep inky violet/blue with small sparkling hematite platelets.

This variety of iolite (or cordierite) is sometimes described as bloodshot iolite.  It is hard to photograph, but has a subtle sparkle of light reflected from the hematite platelets (it is not as obvious as the sparkle seen in goldstone).

With a hardness of 7-7.5, fair to good stability, brittle nature and poor toughness, this stone is less suitable for rings, bracelets or cufflinks and care needs to be taken when designing for this stone and when working with it.
