The growth lines echoing the 6-sided crystal form, separating the lighter and darker purple zones make this a really beautiful stone. The purple colouration of amethyst is caused by iron impurities within the quartz. This stone has a slightly convex rather than flat back.
With a hardness of 7, good toughness and stability, crystalline quartz is suitable for use in rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, brooches and cufflinks, although abrasion and wear may occur in rings and bracelets.
Hardness – resistance to scratching and wear
Stability – resistance to alteration by light, heat or chemicals
Toughness – resistance to fracture, cleavage or cracking
