Echoes of the colour zoning in dark purple and paler amethyst tones (associated with Brazil twinning for anyone interested…). The purple colouration of amethyst is caused by iron impurities within the quartz.
With a hardness of 7, good toughness and stability, crystalline quartz is suitable for use in rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, brooches and cufflinks, although abrasion and wear may occur in rings and bracelets.
Hardness – resistance to scratching and wear
Stability – resistance to alteration by light, heat or chemicals
Toughness – resistance to fracture, cleavage or cracking
